The motor ship “Port Olya-2”, which was heading to Iran, ran aground and blocked the Volga-Caspian sea shipping channel. About it reported in the management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Astrakhan region.
“The crew of 14 people. There is no damage to the vessel, no fuel spillage. <...> The passage of ships is blocked,” the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations wrote in its Telegram channel. The service also added that there was a cargo on board with a total mass of about 4,550 tons. A tugboat was sent to help the ship.
May 25 dry cargo ship Xin Hai Tong from Hong Kong blocked the Suez Canal, also running aground. The channel was closed for two hours, after which the shipping company Leth Agencies announced on Twitter that the ship was refloated.
This is not the first incident with the Suez Canal. On March 23, 2021, en route from China to Rotterdam under the flag of Panama, Ever Given with 20,000 containers on board, while passing through the Suez Canal, in a sandstorm, veered off course and ran aground.
The incident caused a days-long collapse of global freight traffic. As a result, more than 450 ships lined up for Ever Given. It was possible to remove the ship from the shallows almost a week later, on March 29, 2021. The Suez Canal Administration estimated the damage from the blockage at $1 billion.
