A warming trend has emerged in Russia: in the last decade, temperatures in the country were 2.2°C higher than in 1950–1979, according to a Yandex Weather study. According to it, in all Russian cities with a population of one million, the proportion of cold days is decreasing and the proportion of warm days is increasing.
As part of the study, experts analyzed historical data from Yandex Weather. The base period for the assessment was 30 years from 1950 to 1979.
In particular, in Rostov-on-Don, the number of days with temperatures below zero fell almost twice: in the 1950s, their share was 25%, in the 2020s – 13%. In St. Petersburg in the 1950s, 15% of days had an average temperature of +15°C or higher; now there are almost a quarter of such days.
In cities with a population of over a million, the lowest temperatures were recorded until the early 90s. The last record was set in Voronezh on January 9, 1987, when the temperature dropped to -35.3°C. Also, all of these cities averaged more rainfall between 2014 and 2023 than between 1950 and 1979. At the same time, the number of days during which snow remained on the streets is reduced.
World Meteorological Organization in 2023 reportedthat the last eight years (2015–2022) have been the warmest on record. According to her data, annual global temperatures exceeded pre-industrial levels (1850–1900) by at least 1°C. The years 2016, 2019 and 2020 particularly distinguished themselves. The consequences of global warming include an increase in the temperature of the World Ocean and the active melting of glaciers.
Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov saidthat 59 regions of Russia have approved plans for adaptation to climate change.
