The share of flights without landing in Moscow for the first time reached 50%

Alexey Sinitsky, Research and Development Director at Infomost Consulting, noted that before the start of the special operation, a significant part of the domestic passenger traffic accounted for flights to the south of Russia through Moscow. However, after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, 11 southern airports were closed, which led to an increase in direct flights to the North Caucasus and a change in the transfer flow, according to an S7 representative. He added that now they fly to this region through regional hubs, and not through Moscow.
In addition, the growth in the share of flights bypassing Moscow was influenced by the ban on flights of Russian airlines to countries in Europe, aviation expert Grigory Pomerantsev believes. According to him, this has led to carriers focusing on domestic flights. The S7 representative confirmed that the ban on flights to Europe gave impetus to the active development of direct routes between Russian cities.
The subsidizing of domestic routes also had an impact, said Elina Kulieva, director of corporate ratings at Expert RA. In 2022, state support amounted to 174.2 billion rubles. Thanks to these measures, airlines and airports were able to systematically continue their activities, Neradko noted.
