The Seimas of Latvia banned athletes from playing with the national teams of Russia and Belarus

The Seimas of Latvia adopted amendments to the law on sports, according to which it is prohibited to hold competitions with the participation of athletes from Russia or Belarus on the territory of the country. The restriction applies to the participation of teams under both national and neutral flags.
According to the text of the amendments, Latvian athletes are prohibited from playing with the national teams of Russia and Belarus on the territory of other countries. Deputy and one of the authors of the law, Davis Martins Daugavetis, said that international sports organizations should respect Latvian laws and not place athletes in the same matches.
The ban on competitions for Russian and Belarusian teams in Latvia applies to both adult and youth teams. The main purpose of the law is to emphasize solidarity with Ukraine and “block any attempts by Russia to legitimize crimes through sports,” the explanation to the amendments says.
January 24, head of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Aleksandar Čeferin reported about the desire to soften restrictions on participation in competitions for youth teams from Russia. According to him, this will help “avoid brainwashing children” and will not allow them to be punished for something that is not their fault. Adult Russian teams and clubs should return to competition only after the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, the head of UEFA added.
