Western countries encourage attacks by hacker groups on Russia, said First Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Rashid Nurgaliev. In his opinion, it is necessary to create a convention that would prevent the use of the Internet for geopolitical confrontation.

“It is known that the intelligence services of Western countries actively use the capabilities of information technology to conduct computer attacks on critical infrastructure facilities in our country and for intelligence activities,” Rashid Nurgaliev said in an interview “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”.

According to him, the authorities in the United States and England “encourage the transnational activities of hacker groups and individual criminals” so that their actions damage the economy and security of Russia and “negatively influence public opinion.” Rashida Nurgaliyeva also said that the Scientific Council under the Security Council considers it necessary to create a system at the UN that prevents the “militarization of cyberspace.” The council meeting took place this week.

Previously “Kommersant” got acquainted with data from cybersecurity companies on the dynamics of the number of hacker groups that attacked the Russian IT infrastructure. The data shows that this year alone the number of such attacks has increased by more than 20%. The development of criminal IT groups is facilitated by the active sale of hacker tools on the shadow market.
