Head of the Laboratory of Seismic Hazard of the Institute of Physics of the Earth named after V.I. O.Yu. Schmidt RAS, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Dmitry Zavyalov in an interview with “Gazeta.Ru” stated that in Russia the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka are considered to be the most anomalous regions.

According to him, they are followed by Lake Baikal, Sakhalin, the Sayans, the Southern Urals, Altai, Crimea, the North Caucasus and the Kaliningrad region. It is in these zones that most of all strong earthquakes occur – from 60 to 80%.

He clarified that those zones that differ from others in their statistical data are anomalous. All of the above zones were determined using a technique that was developed in the mid-1990s by specialists from the IPE RAS.

“We have been using this technique for over 30 years. It includes a set of prognostic features. These signs are seismological and are based on the study of the behavior of weak earthquakes in anticipation of a strong one,” Zavyalov emphasized.
