The scandalous life of Karl Lagerfeld became a TV series

The legendary designer was played by Daniel Brühl

The presentation of the French series “Kaiser Karl” (in the American version “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld”) at the Cannes Film Festival promises to be one of the most intriguing television events. The world of fashion does not get into scripts very often, but the excitement around films – biographies of famous personalities can correct this situation.

In the trailer for the series, the main character doesn’t bear an impressive resemblance to the fashion design guru. The role of Lagerfeld is played by the Spaniard Daniel Brühl (the actor became widely known after Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds), and the plot takes place at a time when Lagerfeld was not yet a tabloid hero, a gray-haired mysterious man in large black glasses and skinny jeans.

It’s the early seventies, 38-year-old Lagerfeld is a little-known ready-to-wear designer who works for the houses of Chloe and Fendi, his path to global fame is just beginning. However, Karl’s ambitions are already quite Kaiser-like, which creates a corresponding reputation for the designer. He is ready to fight to the death with Pierre Berger, one of the most influential managers in the fashion world, founder of the Yves Saint Laurent house, future president of the French Chamber of Haute Couture, and go to the top of this capricious industry.

The setting for the story of Lagerfeld’s development as a designer is appropriate. Paris, Monaco, Rome, bohemian and not the most healthy parties, passionate novels, Marlene Dietrich (Sunni Melles) and Andy Warhol (Paul Spera) as participants in the events and three thousand costumes of those times. The script is based on the book Kaiser Karl, the most comprehensive biography of Lagerfeld, written by Le Monde journalist Raphael Bakke. As is often the case with scripts, only the most cinematic years of the designer’s biography were included in the series. Directors Jérôme Sall and Audrey Estrugo put fashionable passions into six episodes.

This is not the first time that Karl Lagerfeld’s persona has become an image for feature films. But if in the film “Yves Saint Laurent” (2014) Lagerfeld, played by the American actor Nikolai Kinski, is only a minor character, then in the new series Saint Laurent (this time played by Arnaud Valois) turns from the main character into an episodic character.

But the most sought-after designer for biopics and TV series is still Coco Chanel. Ten projects have already been filmed about her, including the very sensational “Coco Chanel” (2008) with Shirley MacLaine in the title role and “Coco before Chanel” (2009), where the legendary woman was played by Audrey Tautou.
