The case of the inheritance of dollar billionaire Oleg Burlakov has taken a new turn. Previous court decisions had divided it between his sister and her husband, the billionaire’s business partner, but other close relatives did not agree with this.
Oleg Burlakov, the author of dozens of scientific papers and many inventions, began his business career in the late 80s. He worked in the oil industry, was engaged in the production of cement, and led many other business projects. Back in 1994, he moved to Canada with his family, fearing for the lives of his daughters, but he continued his business in Russia. In 2021, he died in a clinic near Moscow from the consequences of coronavirus. Then a conflict arose between his wife and two daughters, on the one hand, and his sister Vera and her husband Nikolai Kazakov, a long-time business partner, on the other. By the way, at the time of his death, divorce proceedings were underway between the businessman and his wife.
Oleg Burlakov spent the last years of his life in Monaco, where he drew up a will, according to which a significant share of the property after his death was to go to the Vera and Nikolai Kazakov Foundation. This will of the Kazakova wife was presented to the Lyublinsky District Court of the capital. Since Russian inheritance legislation requires consideration of such cases in accordance with the norms of those countries where the testator lived before his death, Burlakov’s property was equally divided between his sister and her husband. The Moscow City Court and the Second Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction supported their colleagues from lower authorities.
But after Burlakov’s widow appealed to the Supreme Court, the situation changed. The panel of judges found a number of inconsistencies in the case. In particular, the fact that the foundation, and not the Kazakov couple, should have inherited. By the way, lawyers for Burlakov’s wife and daughters raised doubts that such a fund existed at the time of the businessman’s death. In addition, the testator spent the last days of his life not in Monaco, but near Moscow. There were other discrepancies between court decisions and legislation. Therefore, the case is sent for review to the appellate court.
