The Russians were told why you need to close the cameras in ATMs

Fraudsters are increasingly using fake ATM cameras to carry out crimes. Under the guise of ordinary video cameras installed on ATMs, they gain access to clients’ personal data, including card PIN codes, said Shamil Magomedov, head of the department of “Intelligent Information Security Systems” at the Institute of Cybersecurity and Digital Technologies of RTU MIREA.

Fake cameras can be placed anywhere on the ATM or even next to it, the specialist noted in an interview “Gazeta.Ru”. Distinguishing a real camcorder from a scammer’s tool can be difficult. According to Magomedov, traces of glue around the camera lens or a loose device could be signs indicating the possibility of data theft.

However, the expert advises not to worry too much about this type of crime. ATMs are checked daily by cash collectors for damage and tampering. You can also use your bank’s app to check the ATM to ensure that the device belongs to a financial institution.

The expert also emphasized that if there are doubts about the reliability of an ATM, it is better to choose another one. It is especially recommended to use ATMs in bank branches where access is difficult for criminals. If this is not possible, there are simple safety precautions to keep in mind, such as covering your hand with your other hand when entering your PIN or covering the ATM camera with your hand. However, it is worth remembering that if you cover a genuine camera, you may face difficulties if problems arise with operations – it will be more difficult to prove your case.
