Agronomist Vikulov warned about the risk of poisoning with early watermelons and melons due to nitrates
In an interview with Sputnik radio, agronomist Vladimir Vikulov warned about the risk of poisoning with early watermelons and melons due to the excess content of nitrates.
The specialist noted that unscrupulous farmers may exceed the recommended doses of mineral fertilizers in order to get an early harvest and speed up the start of trade. As a result, melons and gourds can produce excessive amounts of nitrates, which can be hazardous to health.
To reduce the risk of poisoning, Vikulov recommends eating watermelons and melons in small portions. According to him, it is better for a healthy person not to eat more than 200-300 grams of early watermelons and melons at a time, and children and the elderly should eat even less gourds.
The season of watermelons and melons in Russia begins at the end of July, Vikulov recalled.
