Geophysicist Anisimov warned that the current magnetic storm could cause disruptions in communications
Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Director of the Borok Geophysical Observatory, a branch of the IPE RAS Sergey Anisimov in an interview with “Gazeta.Ru” warned the Russians that changes in the magnetic field, which are caused by the currently observed magnetic storm, could lead to the appearance of induced currents in electrically conductive systems, thereby causing disruptions in power supply and communications.
According to the expert, now there is a strong magnetic storm, which has not been equal in strength for several years. Anisimov explained that it could damage power supply or communications systems, especially those that affect the ionosphere, in particular, this concerns the GPS signal.
At the same time, he clarified that if the systems are in good working order and comply with the standards, then everything will work fine, and in the operation of GPS systems, scientists take into account the state of the magnetic field. The specialist pointed out that in the Borok observatory, the level of the K-index of the deviation of the Earth’s magnetic field from the norm is fixed, and from 6 to 9 in the morning Moscow time it was 9, that is, it was the maximum.
Anisimov added that now there is a decline, but in the near future, when the night side of the Earth will be in the tail of the magnetosphere, the K-index may again rise to eight.
