The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) calls on participants in same-sex unions to repent. Thus, a member of the biblical and theological commission of the Russian Orthodox Church, rector of the Orthodox St. Tikhon’s Humanitarian University (PSTGU), Archpriest Vladimir Vorobyov commented on the declaration of Fiducia supplicans adopted in the Vatican on the blessing of same-sex unions.
“All members of the commission unanimously confirmed the traditional Christian attitude towards sin and sinners: sin must be condemned, and sinners are called to repentance, that is, to struggle and victory over sin. This expresses complete rejection of the sin of Sodom and the absolute unacceptability of any socialization of same-sex cohabitation,” the archpriest said in an interview with TASS.
“The Orthodox Church calls such sinners, like all others, to repentance and a conscious return to a chaste Christian life,” he added.
In December, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of the Roman Catholic Church adopted the declaration of Fiducia supplicans. The document, signed by Pope Francis, proposed forms of blessing for same-sex unions for the first time in the history of the Catholic Church.
In December 2022, Russia passed a law banning LGBT propaganda on the Internet, media, books, audiovisual services, cinema and advertising. In the fall of 2023, the Supreme Court of Russia banned the activities of the defunct “International LGBT Social Movement” and declared it extremist.
