The Russian Orthodox Church called for a ban on the use of human faces and voices in AI technologies

Artificial intelligence (AI) with a human face or voice should be banned due to the use of the image and likeness of a person and his qualities as a living being. This call was made by the chairman of the Patriarchal Commission on Family Affairs, Protection of Motherhood and Children of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), Priest Fyodor Lukyanov, reported Vedomosti.
“It is necessary to establish a ban on the use of human voices and faces in AI programs and technologies, i.e. the image and likeness of a person and his qualities as a living being. In fact, we need a ban on the anthropomorphization of programs, technologies, robots, that is, a ban on transferring the human image and its properties to inanimate objects, ”the priest said in a presentation that he made at a round table discussing legal regulation and the use of neural network technologies at the Higher School of Economics.
Fedor Lukyanov considers it necessary to fix at the legislative level the introduction of marking for neural networks, which will warn a person that he is communicating with artificial intelligence. He also recommended establishing the responsibility of the developer for the content of information transmitted by the program. As an example, the priest pointed out China, where such responsibility is enshrined in both administrative and criminal law.
According to Fedor Lukyanov, it is necessary to protect minors from neural networks because of the high risk of influencing the child’s psyche. At the same time, ChatGPT should be localized for the computing infrastructure and telecommunications networks of Russia, “after all, Western countries build their neural networks based on their own ethics, which may differ from the Russian one.”
ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by Open AI. It was launched on November 30, 2022. It can write code, create and translate texts, engage in dialogue, compose poetry and prose, summarize scientific articles, and generate images on demand from users.
Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that, despite criticism of artificial intelligence, the Russian authorities will continue to develop it. At the same time, he pointed to the need to regulate AI. “As for the point of view of those who talk about the dangers of AI, you know that any medicine, if used incorrectly, turns into poison. As AI expands its presence in the economy, in public life, regulation will also be required there,” he added.
