The Russian Ministry of Defense proposed to reorganize the Northern Fleet and deprive it of its status as a military district. The department has already developed project corresponding decree of the head of state.
The Ministry of Defense justifies the need to abolish the status of the Northern Fleet as a separate military district by changes in the structure of the department. As the ministry notes, all regions that belonged to the military district of the Northern Fleet (Nenets Autonomous District, Komi Republic, Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions) will be included in the Leningrad Military District being created in Russia.
ABOUT creation in the Russian Federation of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts, the head of the Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu announced in December last year. On August 9, the board of the Ministry of Defense considered this issue and officially approved decision to create new military districts. Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Colonel General Evgeny Burdinsky said that this would be made until the end of 2023. It is assumed that the Leningrad district will deal with threats from Finland, which has joined NATO and Estonia, which has long been a member of the alliance, and the Moscow district will deal with the Ukrainian direction.
