The Russian Jewish Congress urged to write the word “Holocaust” with a capital letter

The Russian Jewish Congress (RJC) called for changes to the rules of the Russian language and to fix the spelling of the word “Holocaust” with a capital letter. As Mikhail Savin, head of the press service of the RJC, said, this will help to avoid blurring the very concept.
The RJC noted that today almost any negative event is called the Holocaust, which, according to the organization, insults the memory of the six million Jews who died during the Second World War, and also belittles the feat of the Righteous Among the Nations and Soviet soldiers.
Also, the RJC noticed that many media write the word “Holocaust” with a small letter, as this is required by the norms specified in spelling dictionaries. Another part of the sources recommends capitalizing this word for a historical event and with a small one if it is used as a synonym for the word “genocide”.
“However, the Holocaust is not a synonym for genocide. This is a very specific concept, which means the mass destruction of Jews by the Nazis during World War II,” Savin explained.
The RJC has been asked to issue a recommendation for spelling dictionaries, media and online directories that will define the only correct spelling of the word “Holocaust”.
