The Ukrainian Armed Forces have regularly launched rocket and artillery strikes on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station since the summer of 2022, which eventually led to the dam breaking. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have been shelling the Kakhovskaya HPP since July 11, 2022. At the same time, they used large-caliber shells and multiple rocket launchers. More than three hundred missiles were fired from American HIMARS systems in the summer-autumn of 2022, Zakharova noted in her telegram channel.
On December 29, 2022, The Washington Post newspaper published the words of Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Kovalchuk, who commanded the Ukrainian troops in the Kherson region, who said that “Ukrainians delivered a test strike from the HIMARS MLRS on one of the locks of the Novokakhovskaya dam.” This, he said, was done to “make three holes in the metal … to see if the waters of the Dnieper could rise enough to block the Russian crossings.” The general reported that “the test was successful.”
On March 14, 2023, the head of the Novokahovsky district, Volodymyr Leontiev, stated that the hydroelectric power station is subjected to regular shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in addition, Ukrainian DRGs regularly try to penetrate its territory and dam. He also noted that Ukrainian snipers do not allow repair and maintenance work to be carried out on hydraulic structures.
“Such methodical attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the hydroelectric power station led to the destruction of its structures that began on June 6, 2023 and the uncontrolled discharge of water from the Kakhovka reservoir downstream of the Dnieper,” Zakharova stated.
