Great Britain will allocate $ 20 million in humanitarian aid to Kyiv after the destruction of the hydroelectric power station

The UK will provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 16 million pounds (about $ 20 million) to eliminate the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, reported on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom.

The funds will also be sent to those affected by the dam break – we are talking about 32,000 people who were in the flood zone. The funds will be distributed among three organizations: £10 million went to the Red Cross, £5 million to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and £1 million to the International Organization for Migration, the Foreign Office said.

In addition, the UK-led Partnership Fund for a Sustainable Ukraine has already delivered two rescue boats and search and rescue and trauma equipment to Kherson to assist in the rescue operations. It is expected that the equipment will begin to arrive in Ukraine next week.

“In addition to immediate rescue efforts, the funding will help respond to the ongoing effects of the flooding, including waterborne infectious diseases, loss of livelihoods and landmine risks,” the statement said.

The breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on the night of June 6. As a result of the incident, an uncontrolled discharge of water began, the level of which reached more than 11 m. A local emergency regime was introduced on the territory of the district, and an emergency regime was also introduced on the territory of the Kherson region. As Acting Governor of the region Vladimir Saldo said today with reference to the preliminary calculations of hydrologists, the Dnieper River will return to its usual course below the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station by June 16. On the morning of June 10, over 6,000 people were evacuated from the flooded territories of the Kherson region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the incident a barbaric action by the Ukrainian authorities, which led to a large-scale environmental and humanitarian catastrophe.
