The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation criticized the comment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the exclusion of Russian athletes from participation in the Olympic Games. Moscow called the decision to ban Russians participation discrimination.
“The Committee’s approach cannot be regarded as anything other than segregation based on nationality, and therefore must be reviewed in accordance with the norms of international legal documents in the sports field and the spirit of the international Olympic movement,” it says comments Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The IOC, in a commentary, explained the suspension of Russian athletes by the fact that the military operation in Ukraine began during the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing, which was “a violation of the Olympic truce in force at that time and a violation of the Olympic Charter.” The Russian Foreign Ministry considers this explanation unacceptable; it accused the IOC of double standards.
The ministry recalled that athletes from Lebanon, the Kingdom of Iraq and Syria took part in the 1948 Olympics, despite the Arab-Israeli conflict; teams from France and Great Britain competed in the 1956 Olympics, although “contingents of these states invaded Egypt.” The USA participated in the Olympics in 1964, 1968, 1972, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, although at that time they fought in Vietnam and Iraq. “Recent statements by the IOC press service demonstrate not only the double standards of the current administration of the world Olympic movement, but also the discrimination implemented by the IOC on the basis of nationality,” the commentary says.
In March 2022, the Olympic Committee recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in international competitions. A year later, the IOC recommended allowing athletes from Belarus and Russia to compete in a neutral status.
