Last night, another earthquake of magnitude 5.1 struck the Turkish province of Hatay. Several buildings collapsed, which had already been damaged – although some seismologists assured that the worst was over. Russian Dmitry is now in Khatai as a volunteer. The young man described what happened in the city after the next push, and spoke about the situation in the city.

The first time Dmitry went to Hatay immediately after the earthquake. A few days ago he came back here again.

– The last earthquake of 5.1 points I found on the street, – says Dmitry. – Standing on the street with friends near parked cars. At first I didn’t understand what happened. I was covered by such a state, as if swaying, it began to feel nauseous. This is what happens when you are on a boat.

Then he looked at the cars, they were shaking. Vibrations were felt in the legs, but they were not sharp, but smooth “back and forth.” The impression is unpleasant. Imagine you are standing on the ground, and it moves from side to side.

My friends at that time were in one of the houses. They said that when the tremors began, their walls were shaking. They quickly ran outside. Other acquaintances began to crack the walls and everything that was in the house.

– Did you see how the houses collapsed?

– Where I was, there were no repeated destructions. As far as I understand, those houses that were already tilted fell. In Khatai, 90 percent of buildings were destroyed. You no longer understand what was destroyed before, and what is now, with a second push.

Do people still live on the street?

– Compared to our previous trip, now there are much fewer of them. But not to say that there are very few of them.

– Is there electricity?

– Appears. Communication is in places, but not everywhere. There are areas where shops operate, but there are very few of them.

– I heard that filming is now prohibited in those areas?

– I also heard that it is impossible to shoot. But while we are filming, no one makes a remark to us. There has been information that volunteers will not be allowed to come here. We drove in without any problems. Although there are military and police officers everywhere, this has become more serious. Everyone’s documents are checked, we were asked where and why we were going. We named a specific location and showed what we were taking.

– Do you think it is possible to restore the city or should everything be demolished and started anew?

– Now here go different experts, examine houses. In my opinion, everything will be taken apart. Because the houses are poorly built, there is nothing to restore, everything is demolished. I see that they are already doing demolition, bulldozers are slowly clearing the ruins.
