The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the servicemen released as a result of the exchange with Ukraine are in medical institutions. Tonight they were delivered by a military transport aircraft. They are provided with the necessary psychological and medical assistance, as well as the opportunity to contact their relatives. The number of exchanged Ukrainians is not called.
“Tonight, 55 servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the Donetsk and Lugansk republics were returned from the territory of Ukraine controlled by the Kyiv regime, who were in mortal danger in captivity,” the Defense Ministry said.
Ukraine previously reported that as a result of the exchange, it received 215 military personnel, including the commanders of the Azov regiment (recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia and banned). The head of the office of the President of Ukraine, Yermak, said that a total of 108 Azov fighters were released from captivity. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk was also handed over to Russia. He is not mentioned in the report of the Ministry of Defense. Also, Azov does not appear in it.
Mr. Zelensky also said that, under the terms of the exchange, the released members of the Azov regiment will remain in Turkey “under the personal protectorate of the Turkish president and in comfortable conditions” until the end of hostilities. During yesterday’s communication between Mr. Zelensky and the Ukrainian military via video link, he said that the exchange for Ukraine was successful and “this is an occasion to drink with the whole country.”
