The Russian armed forces practiced delivering a massive nuclear strike with Yars and Sineva ballistic missiles. This was announced by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. The training took place under the leadership of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin.
“Comrade Supreme Commander-in-Chief, in accordance with the training plan for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, under your leadership, training is being conducted to control the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, during which the tasks of delivering a massive nuclear strike by strategic offensive forces in response to an enemy nuclear strike will be practiced,” the minister said (quote from “Interfax”).
Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov added that the Yars missile system of the Strategic Missile Forces, the Northern Fleet missile submarine Tula and two Tu-95MS long-range missile carriers were involved in the training.
As reported on the website Kremlin, during the training, ballistic and cruise missiles were launched. One of the intercontinental ballistic missiles was launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region at the Kura test site in Kamchatka. The Sineva ballistic missile was launched from a nuclear-powered missile submarine.
Previously the Federation Council approved a law revoking ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), under which member countries undertake to cease testing nuclear weapons and agree to permanently renounce participation in such testing.
