Russian Ambassador to Canada Stepanov called the arrest of the An-124 aircraft piracy
The arrest of the Russian An-124-100 aircraft in Canada is piracy and hijacking, the Russian Ambassador to Ottawa Oleg Stepanov told the agency RIA News. According to him, Russia will continue to seek justice and the return of the plane.
He said that in August 2023, the airline that owns the plane sent an official notification to the Canadian authorities, in which it proposed to peacefully resolve the dispute regarding the seized aircraft. Also in the appeal, the organization warned that if it refuses to resolve the issue within six months from the date Canada receives the document, the company will initiate arbitration proceedings. A few days later, the media, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote that the notification had been received and the authorities were evaluating the initiative.
“No matter what the Canadian government calls it, there is no mistake: the illegal arrest of the Russian An-124 in Toronto is hijacking, theft and piracy,” said Oleg Stepanov.
The plane was blocked in Canada in February 2022, when it was carrying out a humanitarian flight ordered by the government of a North American country, transporting COVID-19 test kits from China. After unloading, the An-124 was prohibited from taking off, as a document was issued prohibiting Russian aircraft from leaving Canadian airspace.
In June, the country’s government ordered the seizure of the plane in order to use it in the interests of Ukraine.
