“The RFU just needs to not spoil what is beginning to emerge” – Kommersant FM

The Russian national football team can play with the Chinese team. This was announced by the head of the RFU, Alexander Dyukov. Football officials plan to hold a meeting with the Chinese national team next season. In 2023, Valery Karpin’s team completed their performance with a major victory over the Cuban team with a score of 8:0. The match in Volgograd showed that football officials have finally found a format in which national team meetings will be in demand, says Kommersant FM sports commentator Vladimir Osipov.
A lot of materials were published on the topic “we don’t need this kind of football” last year, especially when the national team played poorly. I remember that in the match with Kenya everything was depressing, including the half-empty stands at the Titanic Stadium in Turkey. And you can’t even count how many witticisms there were about the name.
After that game, the team was simply smeared in the media space. And in general, all the meetings where something didn’t work out for Karpin’s team were remembered by the media with the pleasure of masochists, constantly emphasizing that no one needed all this, especially the players themselves.
Perhaps in other times the RFU would not have noticed this message, but now everything is different. Therefore, when officials reached an agreement with, to put it mildly, not the strongest team in Cuba, those who were monitoring the situation probably noticed that the match was starting to be promoted on social networks, for example.
The video was shot with Karpin in the leading role, the right stadium was finally chosen, in a city where they love football, but the national team hasn’t played for more than 20 years.
Not to mention that they invited the stars of yesteryear to an autograph session before the game. By the way, there were a lot of people who wanted to talk to Denis Glushakov, Alexander Samedov, Pavel Pogryabnyak or the legendary Rotor midfielder Valery Esipov; fans stood in line.
And the attendance at the Volgograd Arena did not raise any questions. To be precise, 40.7 thousand people came to the stadium that day. And the team, of course, “gave the nail”: eight goals and dozens of dangerous moments.
It is clear that everything that happened had nothing to do with football. Compared to the Russian ones, Cuban football players are children. It was a show that proved that national team matches are an important story in difficult times of endless suspensions and disqualifications.
And now positive reviews are appearing in the media. One well-known sports website, which recently left no stone unturned from Karpin’s team, now writes that the national team is “an important root phenomenon.” Another site publishes an interview with former RFU general director Alexander Tukmanov, who says that holding matches in the regions is a good idea. This is how we are being gently prepared for the new format. They haven’t named the cities yet, but even offhand, three arenas immediately come to mind: Kalingrad, Samara and Nizhny Novgorod.
But this is only with new arenas. And there are places where the stadiums are simpler, but people will definitely come to watch the national team match: Vladivostok or Nalchik, for example. And with the stands full, as Volgograd showed, the national team players play with desire.
So now officials from the RFU just need not to spoil what is slowly beginning to emerge. Therefore, it is too early to praise the organization, but it is definitely worth noting the progress in decisions with restraint.
