The Russian Football Union (RFU) has entered into an agreement with the Chinese company Rigour Tech to provide equipment for a virtual system for determining offside lines (VOL). The RFU plans to resume the use of VOL in the matches of the Russian Premier League by the end of the current season.
VOL is part of the VAR video replay system, the use of which was included in the official rules of football in 2018. The VOL system automatically detects if a player is offside and displays a virtual offside line on the VAR screen and on TV broadcasts.
“By the end of the season, it is planned to use it in all RPL matches and TV broadcasts. To date, the virtual system for determining offside lines is undergoing the final test for obtaining a FIFA certificate. After receiving it, it can be used at RPL matches and on TV broadcasts, ”said press office RFS.
RFU Secretary General Maxim Mitrofanov told the press service that the football union’s cooperation with the Chinese company will not be limited to the introduction of the VOL system. “Cooperation with the Russian Football Union is our first step. We are ready to offer the most affordable conditions for the integration of the VAR and VOL project in the RPL and the First League, ”the press service reports the words of Rigour Tech Chairman Liu Zheng.
The VAR system and the VOL included in it have been used in the RPL since the 2019/2020 season. Until the summer of 2022, the British company Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd was the operator of VAR in Russia. In the current season of the Premier League, VAR is provided by the Russian provider Slomo, which does not support VOL.
