The reason for the mass death of sardines in Kunashir could be a sharp drop in temperature, Irina Nevedomskaya, deputy director of the Kurilsky reserve, believes. As the administration of the Yuzhno-Kurilsky district notes, the shores of Pervukhin Bay turned out to be “strewn with tons of dead fish”.
“Perhaps during the period of storms, there was a sharp drop in water temperature in the area where there were massive concentrations of wasashi. As a result, a thermal shock could occur in the fish, which subsequently caused death, ”says Ms. Nevedomskaya in a comment, cited by the administration of the South Kuril region in Telegram.
The Sakhalin-Kuril Department of the Federal Agency for Fishery has not yet found any visible contamination at the site of the death of the fish. The exact cause will be established after analysis and examinations. The mass death of fish became known the day before, on January 13.
