The spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, declined to comment on statements by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel and ex-President Francois Hollande of France that the Minsk agreements had bought time for Kyiv to strengthen the army.

Earlier, the former French leader agreed with the ex-Chancellor of Germany that the Minsk agreements gave the Kyiv regime a head start. Shortly before this, Merkel noted that these 2014 agreements “were an attempt to give Ukraine time” to become stronger. She expressed doubt that the NATO countries could then do as much as they are doing now to help Ukraine.

Answering the question during the briefing to what extent the statements of Merkel and Hollande reflect the position of UN Secretary General António Guterres on the Minsk agreements, Dujarric said that “this is a very legitimate question.” However, he would prefer to leave the historical analysis to reporters, former officials, and historians as well.

According to him, the UN is focused on today and trying to end the conflict.
