The Regional Legislative Assembly canceled the direct election of the mayor of Novosibirsk

In the Novosibirsk region, the regional parliament canceled the direct elections of mayors of Novosibirsk and the science city of Koltsovo. The corresponding bill was adopted in two readings at the session of the Legislative Assembly on February 20.
During the discussion of the bill, representatives of the factions of United Russia and the Liberal Democratic Party expressed their support for it. In addition, United Russia Governor Andrey Travnikov, who took part in the discussion, called the document correct and timely. According to supporters of changing the election model, replacing direct elections with competition will increase the efficiency of local self-government. Arguments against were brought by deputies from the factions of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and the New People party.
As a result, 50 deputies voted in support of the bill in the first reading. 13 voted against, one deputy abstained, another did not participate in the vote. There are 76 seats in the legislature.
The new model for electing a mayor in Novosibirsk will only be launched in autumn 2024. Then the second term of office of the head of the city, communist Anatoly Lokot, expires.
