Briton had coronavirus for 411 days

A Briton who had been ill with COVID-19 for 411 days was cured of the illness by a drug cocktail of antibodies taken by Donald Trump.

According to Sky News, the 59-year-old patient was infected with an early variant of the virus and could not get rid of the coronavirus infection due to a weakened immune system after a kidney transplant.

Medics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London say they are not aware of any other documented case of a person being cured after such a long infection.

The experts used genetic analysis to determine that the 59-year-old man (who has not been identified) still had an early variant of the original strain from Wuhan, which had long been overtaken worldwide by the Alpha, Delta and Omicron variants. Only when doctors identified a variant of the coronavirus were they able to cure it with the same medicinal cocktail that helped Donald Trump fight the disease.

This cocktail of neutralizing antibodies, which is known to be effective against early variants of the coronavirus, finally allowed the patient’s body to get rid of COVID.

The same medical team treated a patient with an underlying medical condition who died after testing positive for 505 days. In both cases, genetic testing showed that the patients had not been re-infected.

The team’s findings are published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Cases of persistent infection are different from protracted COVID, where a patient may have symptoms for several months or longer, but the test does not test positive for the coronavirus.

The case management team has called for more research into antibody treatments for resistant COVID cases.

The emergence of new variants of Covid means that treatment with neutralizing antibodies is currently largely ineffective, doctors warn.

Dr Luke Blagdon Snell said: “Some new variants of the virus are resistant to all antibody therapies available in the UK and Europe. Some people with weakened immune systems are still at risk of serious illness and permanent infection. We are still working to understand how best to protect and treat them.”
