During the blockade of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War (WWII), more than a million people died, which is 1.5-2 times more than official statistics. This was stated by the prosecutor of St. Petersburg Viktor Melnik.

During the first court hearing in the case of recognizing the blockade as genocide of the people of the USSR, he recalled that the official data of the Leningrad Regional Commission for the Establishment and Investigation of the Atrocities of the Nazi Invaders speak of 649,000 dead.

The work carried out by the city’s supervisory department with archives and statistics made it possible to establish a significantly higher number of deaths during the blockade, which exceeded a million people, Melnik shared the details.

Earlier it was reported that the TFR had collected evidence that the blockade of Leningrad and other actions of the troops of Nazi Germany were genocide of the population during the Second World War.
