The prosecutor’s office asks to increase the sentence for ex-Argentine President Kirchner to 12 years
Prosecutor Mario Villar has requested that the prison term for former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, convicted of corruption, be increased from 6 to 12 years. The newspaper La Nacion reports this.
The prosecutor insists that it is necessary to recognize the former president as the head of a criminal organization involved in corruption. Currently, Fernandez de Kirchner has been found guilty of “fraud prejudicial to the state.”
A motion to increase the sentence was presented at the appeal hearing. Previously, the verdict against the former president was challenged by both the prosecution and the defense.
In December 2022, the Federal Court of Buenos Aires sentenced Fernandez de Kirchner to 6 years in prison for her participation in corruption schemes in the implementation of infrastructure projects in the province of Santa Cruz. The prosecution claims that during her presidency (2007-2015), most of the contracts were awarded to companies owned by entrepreneur Lázaro Báez. Fernandez de Kirchner was also banned from holding public office.
The former president may remain free until all appeals have been exhausted. Given her age (71 years old), she will also have the opportunity to ask for a prison sentence to be commuted to house arrest.
