In the Primorsky District Court of St. Petersburg, a debate was held in the case of pensioner Irina Tsybaneva, accused of desecrating burial places motivated by political hatred (clause “b”, part 2 of article 244 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, up to five years in prison).

According to the investigation, at the beginning of October 2022, a woman left a note criticizing President Vladimir Putin near the grave of his parents at the Serafimovsky cemetery. Earlier in court hearings, she stated that she did it under the influence of emotions, without realizing what was happening. The news about the special operation, mobilization and the nuclear threat spurred her to such actions.

During the debate, the prosecutor said that Irina Tsybaneva left a note expressing protest against the domestic and foreign policy pursued by the President of the Russian Federation, including the use of the Russian armed forces. However, given the extenuating circumstances – chronic illness and repentance of the defendant, the public prosecutor requested for her three years of suspended sentence.

The defense side noted that the trustee actually did not abuse the grave of the president’s parents, and the note was non-public.

At the previous meeting, Irina Tsybaneva said: “I folded it (the note) with the text down so that it was not visible. She was very small. To make it all invisible, I stuck it next to the grate so that it stood like a stalk. I thought that no one would notice anything, because everything was hidden by grass. The lawyer asked to justify her client and stop the criminal prosecution.

Irina Tsybaneva partially admitted her guilt: she does not deny the fact of the crime, but she does not agree that she left a note motivated by political hatred.

“I am not interested in politics, I have never been to rallies and have no intention of attending. After watching the news, I was overcome with fear. I WAS VERY ILL. I don’t even remember how I wrote it. I realize that I did something wrong. I apologize if my actions could hurt anyone. It was a spontaneous action, not a planned action,” Irina Tsybaneva said in her final speech.

The verdict will be handed down tomorrow, May 11.
