Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov ordered to check information in the media about rising firewood prices. The department will assess the validity of setting prices for wood fuel, as well as the measures taken by authorities to ensure a comfortable life for local residents, the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office reported in Telegram. November 9 “Kommersant” reportedthat the prosecutor’s office of Buryatia organized an investigation into complaints from residents of the Kabansky district of the republic, claiming that they “may freeze this winter or will have to take out loans” to prepare firewood.

A press release from the Prosecutor General’s Office states that the audit will also cover the issues of spending allocated funds to ensure a comfortable life for citizens, subsidizing the cost of services for cutting down trees and transporting timber, as well as fulfilling the requirements established by regional regulatory legal acts for the harvesting of wood by citizens for their own needs.

In early November, representatives of the All-Russian Popular Front contacted the prosecutor’s office of Buryatia and reported that forestry enterprises had stopped the practice of allocating plots where residents of the Kabansky district in previous years could stock up on firewood for a nominal fee under a quota of 20 cubic meters per family. The government of Buryatia referred to environmental legislation limiting timber harvesting in the Central Ecological Zone of Lake Baikal. As an alternative, citizens were offered to collect dead wood or buy wood from commercial organizations.
