In the hall of the Southern District Military Court, the prosecutor announced the indictment in a criminal case related to the assassination attempt on the first head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko and the murder of commander Arsen Pavlov “Motorola”. The investigation into this case has been going on for many years, and four people are in the dock: Alexander Pogorelov, Vasily Churilov, Alexander Timoshenko and Artem Yen.
Thursday’s court hearing was the second in this case. The prosecutor said that in 2014, employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) developed a plan to assassinate the head of the DPR, Alexander Zakharchenko, and created an agent network into which Pogorelov was drawn. He arrived in Donetsk on instructions from the SBU and began surveillance of Zakharchenko. In August 2017, Pogorelov planted an explosive device in a restaurant where Zakharchenko often visited.
In 2016, SBU officers decided to kill the commander of military unit 08806 of the DPR Armed Forces, known as “Motorola”. Pogorelov installed an explosive device on the roof of the elevator in the house where Arsen Pavlov lived. On October 16, an unknown member of a terrorist organization activated an explosive device while the Motorola was in an elevator, resulting in his death.
According to RIA Novosti, according to the indictment, Pogorelov was involved in a number of serious crimes, including a terrorist attack, attempted terrorist attack, an attempt on the life of a government official, participation in a terrorist community, espionage, undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities and carrying explosives. Churilov is accused of participating in a terrorist community and facilitating terrorist activities. Tymoshenko – in espionage and preparation for it, and Yong – in promoting terrorist activities.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for October 10.
