According to Hieromonk Macarius (Markish), Chairman of the Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Ivano-Voznesensk Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Nativity Fast, which began on November 28, is intended to prepare believers for the celebration of the Nativity of Christ.
Abstinence from food and other measures taken during Lent remind us that we are Christians and help us break away from the worship of matter. Fasting is not limited to food only, but also includes other measures that help eliminate self-worship.
The Nativity Fast will last until January 6 inclusive, and on January 7 Orthodox believers will celebrate the Nativity of Christ. At this time, weddings are not held in the Church, and some believers limit themselves to marital intimacy.
