The Argentina national team will receive a record prize of $42 million for the victory at the World Cup. It should be noted that for the first time the International Football Federation (FIFA) began to pay prize money at world championships only in 1982. The prize fund then amounted to $ 20 million, and the winner of the championship was owed $ 2.2 million. It took FIFA 16 years to reach the mark of $ 100 million in prize money. At the 1998 World Championship, the teams shared $103 million, of which the champion got $6 million. The $150 million bar ($8 million for the champion) was taken in 2002, and in 2006 FIFA formed a prize pool of $266 million ($20 million) .
Since 2010, FIFA has decided to pay money not only to the national federations represented at the World Cup, but also to the clubs that the players play for. FIFA also agreed that it would insure players against injuries. That is, since 2010, FIFA’s expenses to encourage participants in the World Cup began to include three items: the actual prize money for games, compensation to clubs, and insurance. As a result, the prize pool has grown to $420 million ($30 million). In 2014, it amounted to $576 million ($35 million), in 2018 – $791 million ($38 million). And in 2022, FIFA reached the $1 billion mark.
As for the distribution of funds between the teams in 2022, as already mentioned, the Argentines will receive $ 42 million. The finalist, the French team, $ 30 million. The third-place Croatian team – $ 27 million, the Moroccans who became the fourth – $ 25 million. All participants in the quarterfinals each will receive $17 million, the teams eliminated in the 1/8 finals will receive $13 million each, and the teams that did not make it through the group stage will receive $9 million each.
