Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are in direct talks about the participation of the Russian leader in the BRICS summit and the situation around the International Criminal Court, RIA Novosti reports citing a representative of the Vice President of South Africa.
“The President speaks directly to President Putin about the ICC issue,” the statement said.
Earlier, the President of South Africa said that the upcoming BRICS summit will be held offline, while the organizers expect the personal presence of the leaders of all BRICS member countries. It was also reported that Moscow negatively perceived the idea of sending Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the event instead of Putin.
South Africa is under the jurisdiction of the ICC, whose pre-trial chamber on March 17 issued a warrant for the “arrest” of Putin and children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova. Russia rejected the jurisdiction of the ICC and its decisions.
