“A lot of money has been allocated here, everything is under the control of the top officials of the state”

President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov spoke about the development and risks of electronic technologies at the opening of the International Scientific and Practical Seminar “Readings of Academician V.N. Boltinsky” at the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K. A. Timiryazev.

Answering the question of how dangerous artificial intelligence (AI) is for humanity, the President of the Academy said that the established Information Security Council considers not only AI, but also electronic technologies themselves.

“There are three problems,” Krasnikov said. – The first is that we are increasingly involved in electronic systems – from electricity to television – everything is controlled by electronics. If there are vulnerabilities there, everything can go dark at one moment: transport can stop, there will be no electricity.

The second danger arises when cybercrimes reach a higher level, when modern technologies make it possible to fake not only voices, but also videos. You see yourself, he speaks in your voice and says… nonsense. Now we see that cyber fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated.

Third. Everyone has a mobile phone. The fact that he can eavesdrop is nonsense – at some point he can call anyone on your behalf! For example, on behalf of the professor of the institute, he will inform all students that there will be no lectures today, instead, everyone will gather there.

The second question that a seminar participant asked Gennady Krasnikov concerned the most pressing issue: when will we finally stop depending on the West in the field of microelectronics?

“During the times of the USSR, the country occupied second or third place in the field of microelectronics,” said the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. “Then, until 2022, we lived like in a supermarket, according to the principle “we’ll buy everything.” I was the head of the Research Institute of Molecular Electronics for 32 years, and so you understand, the United States imposed the first sanctions back in 2016 against us.

Today this topic is classified, but in a nutshell I will say that for the country to be independent, the following production must be restored: highly pure materials, electronic engineering, it is necessary to modernize and increase existing factories. And this is done. A lot of money has been allocated here, everything is under the control of the top officials of the state. We estimate that this will have an effect, we will feel it in 3-4 years, in 2027-2028.
