President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach stated the need to continue to comply with the recommendations regarding sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes.
According to the head of the committee, this situation puts the organization before an insoluble dilemma. He noted that, on the one hand, the IOC cannot fully comply with the Olympic mission, which is to protect athletes and unite the whole world during peaceful competitions. Bach emphasized that the committee had always insisted on this principle in the past when athletes from one country refused to compete with athletes from another country for political reasons. At the moment, in this situation, the only way to protect this mission was to recommend the non-participation of athletes in connection with their passport, the IOC President says with regret. “Keep following the sanctions and sticking to protective measures,” he urged during a meeting of the general assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).
Recall that the IOC Executive Committee, as a result of the start of a special operation by Russia in Ukraine, advised sports federations not to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions.
