President of Moldova Maia Sandu said that the demand of representatives of the public television channel “Moldova-1” to ban speaking Russian during debates in the upcoming local elections is unlawful.
The Moldovan leader stated this when commenting on the conflict surrounding the candidate for the post of mayor of Chisinau, Diana Caraman. She was not allowed to tell her program in Russian and was removed from the air.
According to Maia Sandu, the TV channel showed disrespect for the candidate. They should have let her read the program in Russian. This action requires a change in regulations: it is necessary to give Russian-speaking people access to Russian-language content.
Earlier, a member of the Moldovan Parliament from the opposition Party of Communists, Diana Karaman, contacted the prosecutor with a complaint about the TV channel. Based on her statement, media representatives did not allow her to speak in Russian and kicked her out of the studio.
