Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has stripped figure skaters Margarita Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas of state awards received in 2000. This decision was made due to the fact that the athletes participated in Tatyana Navka’s Swan Lake show in Sochi.
Figure skaters were deprived of awards on the recommendation of the Lithuanian State Awards Commission, reports press office president. “They crossed out their services to the Lithuanian state by the cynical act of participating in a commercial event in Sochi at a time when the blood of innocent people is shed in Ukraine,” Mr. Nauseda told reporters (quoted from TASS).
The President of Lithuania also considers it necessary to revise the legislation in order to be able to deprive Drobiazko of Lithuanian citizenship. She was granted citizenship so that the skater could represent Lithuania at the Olympics.
Despite the decision of the Lithuanian authorities, the skaters will continue to perform in Tatyana Navka’s show, she said. “Margarita and Povilas will continue to perform in the show. They do not change their plans,” said Mrs. Navka. The athletes themselves have not yet commented on the information.
The premiere of the show “Swan Lake” took place yesterday, August 9th. Several more performances are planned this month and in September.
