Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda vetoed the law on national sanctions adopted by the Seimas, which provides for prohibitions and restrictions for citizens of Russia and Belarus, the press service of the head of state reported.
“The President approves the purpose of the law, which is to apply restrictive measures against citizens of Russia and Belarus, but he notes that there are no grounds for establishing different legal regulations for citizens of the two aggressor states and proposes to introduce the same restrictive measures against citizens of both states,” – the president’s office said in a statementquote by Delphi).
The report notes that the law establishes seven different restrictive measures, four of which will apply to citizens of Russia and citizens of Belarus, and three – only to citizens of Russia. “From the point of view of the national security of Lithuania, there are no grounds for a different assessment of the citizens of Belarus and Russia,” the release emphasizes.
On April 4, the Seimas of Lithuania adopted in the second reading a law on restrictions for citizens of Russia and Belarus. According to the document, Russian citizens and legal entities will actually be prohibited from acquiring real estate in Lithuania if they are not residents of the country. For citizens of Belarus, the opportunity to buy real estate was left.
The law will be valid for a year with the possibility of extension. The document actually calls the Russians and Belarusians responsible for the actions of their governments in the Ukrainian conflict. Therefore, those who already have a residence permit and permanent residence (permanent residence) in Lithuania, as well as those who inherit this property, will be able to purchase real estate. Russians can obtain a residence permit if the decision on this is made at the government level or in a situation where a Russian has a Lithuanian Schengen visa or a residence permit in any EU country.
