The President of Brazil, after criticism, explained the words about peace in Ukraine

Brazilian President Lula da Silva has responded to criticism following his recent statements about the conflict in Ukraine. The politician said that the country is not going to please anyone with its opinion, its goal is to encourage Moscow and Kyiv to start negotiations, writes Reuters.

“I want to find a third alternative (to resolve the conflict), which is to build peace,” said Lula da Silva.

The President also clarified that he does not equate Moscow and Kyiv in this conflict, as he understands the importance of territorial integrity. The politician urged to stop hostilities and sit down at the negotiating table. Brazil is ready for the role of mediator.

Lula has repeatedly criticized Western elites for “unilateral actions” in the Ukrainian direction. In particular, at the beginning of the month he stated that “the status of Crimea is not subject to discussion.” These statements by Lula prompted accusations from a US National Security Council spokesman of playing along with Russia and China.

The Kremlin said that Moscow is ready to listen to the proposals of Brazil to achieve peace in Ukraine, which will take into account the interests of Russia. At the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry declaredthat the position of the Brazilian president “does not correspond to the real state of affairs”, in which Moscow and Kyiv are placed on the same scales.
