President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko commented on the import of nuclear weapons at a solemn meeting in honor of the Republic’s Independence Day. The head of state expressed confidence that it would never be applied while he was on the territory of Belarus.

Lukashenka stressed that the appearance of Russian nuclear weapons in the country was his “cruelest initiative.” He noted that he is becoming more and more convinced that it should remain in Belarus, in a safe place. And he declared his confidence that in this case it would never have to be used, but at the same time, the enemy would never set foot on the territory of Belarus.

On March 25, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia, at the request of Belarus, would deploy tactical nuclear weapons in the republic. On June 16, the President of Russia announced the delivery of the first Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus. A week later, Alexander Lukashenko confirmed that a significant part of the ammunition that was planned to be delivered had been brought to the republic.
