Algeria is in favor of accelerating the process of the country’s entry into the BRICS interstate association. Algerian leader Abdelmajid Tebboun made this statement during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Now there is a very tense international situation and it is necessary that we accelerate the process of our entry into the BRICS group,” emphasized Tebbun (quote from Interfax).
Tebbun noted that if Russia and Algeria use “not dollars and not euros”, then this will have a beneficial effect on Algeria.
Algeria applied to join the BRICS in November 2022. Then Tebbun explained that the republic was strongly interested in joining the association and largely met the conditions for joining the bloc.
On June 15, negotiations between Putin and Tebbun are held in the Kremlin, as a result of which joint documents will be signed.
“Russian-Algerian cooperation is currently truly multifaceted and has significant potential for further development,” Putin said. The presidents will sign a Declaration on deepening the strategic partnership between Russia and Algeria, the Russian leader added. Putin also invited Tebbun to the second Russia-Africa summit.
On June 14, it became known that Russia supported Egypt’s bid for BRICS membership. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also stated that the country would like to become part of the association. At the moment, BRICS members are Russia, India, China, Brazil, and South Africa.
