The president is silent, by Pauline Dreyfus: “The words”
[ad_1]
THE CHRONICLE OF ÉTIENNE DE MONTETY – The genre scenes and the tasty gallery of characters painted by the author include a criticism of what is to come: the society of gossip.
The story is in everyone’s memory: at the end of the 1970s, a revelation broke in the press: the President of the Republic would have received from an African potentate a sumptuous gift consisting of diamonds. Is it the symbol, the excessive value of the stones, the reputation of the Head of State, who is said to be a lover of monarchical pomp, the affair spreads and prospers for weeks.
It is this controversy that Pauline Dreyfus stages. It runs, it runs, the rumor… It swells. By a skilful game of construction, punctuation, chapters which intertwine like a farandole, the author undertakes to make this flood of comments a literary object: women of the world, policemen, journalists, pillars of bar, employees of the palace presidential, everyone has if not information at least an opinion on these diamonds. They are the heroes of the book. And the president? He is Godot: we are waiting for him, or rather we are waiting for him to speak.
