According to a report published by the World Wildlife Fund, the number of wild animals on the planet has decreased by 69% since 1970. The main causes are called deforestation and pollution of the oceans.
“This dramatic drop in numbers is a sign that nature is suffering and the natural world is rapidly becoming empty,” said the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Director of Conservation and Policy, Andrew Terry.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report is based on 2018 ZSL data on the status of 32,000 wildlife populations, including over 5,000 different species. The results showed that the number of animals decreased by an average of 69%. Deforestation, pollution, climate change, and in general human activities have been cited as reasons for this fall.
Wildlife populations in Latin America and the Caribbean have been hardest hit, with populations down 94% in just a few decades. The report notes, for example, that the number of pink river dolphins in the Brazilian Amazon decreased by 65% between 1994 and 2016.
“The results of this report correlate with those of the 2020 WWF survey, with wildlife numbers continuing to decline by about 2.5% per year,” Terry added. “Nature has been and still is in a difficult position,” said Mark Wright, director of WWF’s UK office for science.
Because of this wide-ranging decline in wildlife, calls for the conservation of natural diversity are getting louder.
In December, delegates from around the world will gather in Montreal to discuss a new global strategy for plant and animal conservation.
A successful outcome of the meeting is likely to be an increase in funding for conservation activities. WWF Regional Director for Africa Alice Ruhweza called on all rich countries to provide the organization with all possible financial support to protect our nature.
