Pope Francis expressed his readiness to visit Kyiv, but on the condition that his visit to Moscow also takes place. About this he declared in an interview with La Nación newspaper.
“I am ready to go to Kyiv. I want to Kyiv. But subject to a trip to Moscow. I want to go to both places or neither,” he said.
The Pope added that there were no specific agreements on such a trip, but he expressed the opinion that such a trip was possible. “It’s possible. We hope we can do it,” Francis said.
On March 10, in an interview with the newspaper La Repubblica, the pontiff reminded, that immediately after the start of the special operation, he personally came to the Russian Embassy at the Holy See, declaring his readiness to go to Moscow if the Russian authorities agreed to negotiations. In an interview, the Pope reaffirmed his desire to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and called him a “cultured man.” He also said that the conflict in Ukraine involved “imperial interests” of different countries, not just Russia. According to him, “all major powers” are involved in the fighting, and Ukraine has become a “battlefield”. The Pope also condemned the production and supply of weapons.
Earlier, the pontiff repeatedly called on Russia and Ukraine to stop hostilities and sit down at the negotiating table. If in September 2022 the Pope of Rome considered it “morally acceptable” to supply weapons to Ukraine for the defense of the country, then in January he criticized the sending of tanks to Kiev, noting that “this is a road to nowhere.”
On December 25, 2022, in his traditional Christmas address Urbi et Orbi (“To the City and the World”) in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, he called for an end to hostilities in Ukraine, as well as to remember all the protracted conflicts in other countries.
