Chairman of the World Union of Old Believers Leonid Sevastyanov said “RIA News”, that in correspondence he asked Pope Francis to explain the words about the cruelty of the Buryats and Chechens participating in the military operation in Ukraine. According to Mr. Sevastyanov, the pontiff replied that he was trying to show that cruelty “does not come from the Russian soul.”

According to the head of the Union of Old Believers, the Pope said that the media gave “their own interpretation” of his statement. “When I spoke about Russia, I spoke about the tradition of Russian humanism, quoting Dostoevsky. I wanted to make it clear that the cruelties of war do not come from the Russian soul. I have always strived to save the Russian people, because I am convinced that they have a great vocation, ”Leonid Sevastyanov, the pope, cited the answer.

Mr. Sevastyanov is convinced that the “world arms lobby” is trying to “discredit” the head of the Roman Catholic Church. “This lobby has agents, and so does the media. In November, the Pope, commenting on military operations in Ukraine, saidthat, “as a rule, the most cruel, perhaps, are those who are from Russia, but do not adhere to the Russian tradition, such as Chechens, Buryats, and so on.” His words were condemned by the Russian Foreign Ministry, head of the Buddhists of Russia XXIV Pandito Khambo Lama Damba Ayusheev and head of the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia mufti Albir Krganov, head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov.
