The pop joy of Blondie in the fever of New York rock

In 2016, the first six albums of the American group, Blondie, marketed between 1976 and 1982 during its golden age, were collected in a box. With the publication ofAgainst The Odds 1974-1982, here they are with songs released only on the singles – including call me – and a number of new ones. The eight CDs (or twelve vinyls) of this publication are accompanied by an imposing 128-page book of photographs, a text full of information, where the members of the group and their producers return to each song, their common history.
Blondie was born in the rock effervescence of New York during the first half of the 1970s. That of the groups of the local scene: New York Dollsfounded at the end of 1971, the duo Suicide (Martin Rev and Alan Vega who announce that they play “punk music”), Television, led by Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell – the latter would found The Heartbreakers in 1975 –, the pissed off siblings Ramones, Talking Heads, The Dictators… And those from elsewhere who find a warm welcome there, the Patti Smith Group, Iggy and The Stoogesa posteriori the punk reference, the first incarnation of The Modern Lovers…
If the Dolls and Iggy Pop then already have albums to their credit, for the others it is a few 45-laps, recordings to canvass record companies, or even nothing. Thus, Patti Smith’s first album, horsesreleased in December 1975, that of the Ramones in April 1976, of Suicide, founded in 1970, in December 1977… But they meet in the clubs of Manhattan, play there as soon as a date is free, build their mythologies there.
The most pop of the punk scene
They are at Max’s Kansas City (1965-1981), in Union Square, where Lou Reed gives, during the summer of 1970, his last concerts with The Velvet Underground, founded at the end of 1965. And also at the Mercer Arts Center, on the border of Soho and Greenwich Village, opened at the end of 1971 in a dilapidated building, which collapsed one afternoon on August 3, 1973. hall –, in the only season of the television series Vinylin 2016. Or at CBGB, a little further down, in the Bowery, which opened in 1973 and will close in October 2006 with Patti Smith for the final concert.
And so Blondie. The most pop group, which will be the most commercially successful, has singles that are high in the charts, songs that play on the radio. Who combines rock energy with pop joy, rubs shoulders with disco, reggae, the first wave of hip-hop. The origin of Blondie, singer Debbie Harry, former waitress at Max’s Kansas City, who was in the vocal group The Stilettos with guitarist Chris Stein. Under the name Angel and The Snake, with bassist Fred Smith and drummer Billy O’Connor, a first concert took place at CBGB on August 16, 1974 – with Ramones opening for it.
