Argentina’s vice president assassinated

In Argentina, a man tried to shoot the country’s former president, incumbent Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, head of state Alberto Fernandez said in his address to the nation.

The President called the incident the most serious since the restoration of democracy in the country. The assassin managed to come close to Kirchner and point a loaded pistol at her, which, however, did not fire when the trigger was pressed. Fernandez, commenting on the attack, called for “expelling violence and hatred” from the political and media field of Argentina.
Police delayed the attacker, who turned out to be a 35-year-old Brazilian who entered Argentina in 2018. He was already arrested in 2021 for possession of a knife. The assassination attempt came amid Kirchner’s corruption trial, notes TASS: Last week, the Argentine prosecutor’s office demanded that she be sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of corruption in the implementation of infrastructure projects in the province of Santa Cruz during her presidency in 2007-2015. Kirchner herself considers herself a victim of persecution by the opposition. At the time of the assassination attempt, just the supporters of the politician gathered at the house, who came to express their support to her.
